Mt. Pleasant Public Schools (MPPS) has begun installing security door stoppers on classroom doors throughout its middle and high schools as an additional security measure.

“At Mt. Pleasant Public Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remains our number one priority,” said Superintendent Jennifer Verleger. “The district has made several safety enhancements over the past few years thanks to the support of our community, and these security door locks provide another way to help protect students and staff in the case of an active shooter or other emergency event.”

Starting this week, 250 devices are being installed at Mt. Pleasant High School and Mt. Pleasant Middle School. The door barricades are made by Mt. Morris, Michigan-based Nightlock, which makes security devices used in schools, universities, churches, business offices and other buildings.

The project is being funded partially by a grant from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe as well as 2016 bond funds. MPPS plans to eventually install the devices in all classrooms across the district, including elementary buildings.

The 2016 Bond Proposal also supported new secure office entrances at each building, and the 2021 bond passed by voters last November will fund upgrades to district camera and security systems along with other security enhancements.

In addition, officers with the Mt. Pleasant Police Department have been a regular presence at school buildings. MPPS has also implemented ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) training and drills in all buildings.

“Working together, we’re hopeful we can all do our part to increase safety for students and staff because I truly believe our schools should be safe havens for learning and thriving,” Verleger said. “I welcome families and community members to reach out at any time if you have questions about our school safety measures, practices or procedures.”
