Last year, my husband and I bought a van from an HVAC supply company and turned it into a small mobile home. Full disclosure: We rented all the plumbing, electrical and construction (we are good DIYers but know our limitations). If you want to install a fully functional sink or shower in your van, you need a water reservoir. But they take up a lot of valuable space. The smartest place to place it is on the wheels, otherwise it may be left unused. Purchase a fuel tank like this from ICON Technologies, which fits exactly on one of the rear tires of your van, and then build a cabinet/bed/storage room around it.

(We got this and love it! 20 gallons are huge, so we don't need to stop frequently to refill. Please note that if you want to drink the hose water you filled, you need to filter it.)

How you want to shower is one of the many big decisions you must make when building a van. You can a) skip it altogether and rely on campsite showers or chain gym memberships, b) plan to use cold/room temperature water showers in the tank-brave! As far as trucks are concerned, our trucks are very small. We did not include showers in the build, and when we were on the road, we mainly used campsite showers. But we do have a sink! By cleverly placing it next to our sliding door and ensuring that we have a faucet with a long hose, we can rinse off sandy feet or muddy shoes with cold water in a water tank in a pinch. (Or, yes, the whole shower.)

Just like a house, the van you want to sleep in also needs to be insulated. (Unless you only plan to camp in perfect weather...) For hot nights, we installed a fan on the roof. For cold nights, we have a heater. Since we all added heat insulation materials before installing the walls, floors and ceilings, it can be kept at any temperature for several hours. One of the safest and easiest ways to insulate your truck is to use wool! Full disclosure: We use sprayed insulation material because we are in a hurry, which causes various problems with the door mechanism it touches. Sheep wool is obviously softer and more malleable than spray foam, and this problem will never arise!
