STAMFORD, CT — A Stamford police lieutenant was injured and taken to the hospital early Wednesday morning after he tried to stop a car that was rolling in reverse on Bedford Street, the Stamford Police Department said Thursday.

The unnamed lieutenant was treated for injuries and released, and returned to work the following night, according to Capt. Richard Conklin of the SPD.

At around 12:15 a.m., Wednesday, the lieutenant was on routine patrol when he saw a Ford Fusion sedan driving down the wrong way on Bedford Street where it's one-way northbound, Conklin said.

The lieutenant activated his overhead lights to try and stop the car, but the driver, a 31-year-old man, put the car in reverse, then opened the door and fell to the ground, Conklin said, noting that a woman remained in the passenger seat.

The driver was dragged with the car as it began to roll, Conklin said. The lieutenant jumped out of his police car and tried to enter the Ford to apply the brake and put it in park, Conklin said. However, the car had gained momentum and the door hit the lieutenant and dragged him several feet.

The front left tire then ran over the lieutenant's foot, Conklin said. The Ford continued down Bedford Street before it jumped the curb and crashed into the glass doors of a laundromat and stopped.

The driver of the Ford was taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment of injuries, Conklin said.

The SPD is awaiting the results of toxicology reports from the driver, Conklin said, and will investigate the incident for appropriate charges.
