Lincoln Park Farmers Market: will host a Food Safety event with a demo on using a digital kitchen thermometer at the Sunday, Aug. 7 market, 1-1:30 p.m. at the market location of Mellus Park. Mellus Park is on the east side of Fort Street between Arlington & O’Connor in downtown Lincoln Park. Free digital thermometers as well as the USDA magnet ‘Is it done yet?’, will be distributed. The event date also coincides with National Farmers Market Week, of which is, August 7 – August 13, 2022. Doing the food safety demo will be Mark Rodriguez who heads up the food service departments at Lincoln Park Public Schools, Southgate Public Schools, and Wyandotte Public Schools. Baby Buddies Storytime (Ages 0-1): Taylor Community Library, Taylor. Aug. 9, 16, 23, and 30, from 3-3:30 p.m. Weekly story time is aimed toward parents with infants (ages 0-1), older siblings are welcome. We will have lap time and read several books together. Brown Bag Talking Book Discussion: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. In person or call-In.  Aug. 10, from 12-1:30 p.m. The group discusses two books each month.  Listen to both, one, or none. Everyone is welcome. This month’s books are 1) “Vortex: An FBI Thriller” by Catherine Coutler and 2) “David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants” by Malcolm Gladwell. Computer Class: Computer Basics: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. Aug. 11, from 1-2 p.m. This class is designed for those with little or no experience with computers. You will learn the parts of the computer, how to use a mouse, basic navigation with Windows, how to get to the internet, how to open a program, how to save a file, and how to print. Yoga in the Park: Heritage Park, Taylor (just behind the library). Aug. 11, and 18, from 5-6 p.m. Taylor Community Library and The Guidance Center are collaborating to offer three outdoor family yoga sessions. We will have a live yoga instructor teaching adults and children some basic exercises together, and there will be alternative activities for kids who do not want to participate. Capacity is limited to 30 attendees, so please register in advance with the Guidant Center: www.guidance-center.org/yoga. If the weather is bad, this event will move indoors to the library’s community meeting rooms.  Masks required indoors only.

Summer Storytime (Ages 3-8): Taylor Community Library, Taylor. Aug. 13 and 27, from 11 – 11:30 a.m. This program will be held outdoors on the library lawn, weather permitting. If the weather is bad, the event will be canceled. All ages are welcome, but this storytime is aimed toward ages 3-8. Parents must attend Storytime with their children. You will learn how to navigate the Internet, perform basic searches, use websites, search engines, and what various domains mean. City of Taylor’s Friday Family Fun Days: Sheridan Pavilion in Heritage Park, Taylor. Aug. 19, from 12-4 p.m. Looking for some summertime fun? Join the City of Taylor at the Sheridan Pavilion in Heritage Park 12-4 pm for free bounce houses, kids crafts, outdoor games, special guest visitors, Taylor Made Market vendors, and more! This event takes place every third Friday in June, July, August, and September. Books & Bites Book Club: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. Aug. 22, from 6-7:30 p.m. Books & Bites is a monthly book club that reads and discusses Young Adult books. Anyone who is a fan of this genre can attend. If you can’t make it in person, and for general bookish talk, send us a request to join our Facebook group. Storywalk: Taylor Community Library, Fletcher Park, Taylor, located between Pardee and Racho Rd., and Northline and Eureka. Permanent exhibit. August/September featured book is “Are We There Yet?” by Dan Santat. Community members can follow the path throughout the park to read a book in its entirety presented on 16 individual panels. Lego Club: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. Aug. 8, 15, 22, and 29, from 6-7 p.m. Do you love Legos? Join our Lego Club. Every Monday we will challenge you to make something relating to that week’s theme. We will display your creation for one week and will tear them apart at the next event.  This event is open to kids, tweens, teens, and parents. No registration is required, just stop in and build. Textile Lab: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. Aug. 9,16, 23, and 30, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Textile Lab is a weekly lab for textile crafters to come together and work on their projects. If you love to quilt, sew, knit, crochet, embroider, needlepoint, or any other textile crafting, this is the place for you!  An instructor will be available to teach you how to quilt, or to guide you on your projects. Lovely Lotus Walk: Sponsored by the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Airport Natural Area, enter at 28820 E River Rd, Grosse Ile. Enjoy a guided hike in the Airport Nature Area to the American Lotus bed to observe this beautiful wetland flower.  Discover what makes this plant so important for wildlife, technology, and humans. Hike in Airport Natural Area: Sponsored by the Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy, enter at 28820 East River Rd, Grosse Ile, from 1-4 p.m. Event runs through Sunday, Oct. 30. GINLC hosts will be available to open the trails of the Airport Natural Area every Sunday from May to October. Mental Illness Support Group: For relatives and friends of the mentally Ill in the Downriver area meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Dearborn, 600 N.Brady, in Mitchell Hall. Another support group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting on July 20, at 10 a.m., at the Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital’s Rehabilitation Bldg. on the 2nd floor, room 232. Wear a mask and enter the hospital at the main entrance for a Covid-19 check. Then you will follow the letter A on the wall signs and take the Allen  elevators to the 2nd floor. Seamstresses Needed: Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care is seeking volunteer seamstresses to help with the making of memory bears. Memory Bears are made from the clothing that once belonged to a loved one and can bring comfort and peace for grieving family members. All materials are provided. Palliative Care Volunteers Needed: Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care is seeking compassionate people to provide volunteer support to terminally ill patients and their families. Heart to Heart Hospice Volunteers needed: Heart to Heart Hospice is looking for downriver community members to join the group’s team of volunteers, who will visit with patients on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to help increase their quality of life during their finals days. Visits can provide friendship, compassion and distraction from their prognosis. Activities that clients might enjoy are being read to, watching television together, talking about who and where they’ve been, their families, hearing about your day, playing cards, and so much more. Most importantly, we are looking for volunteers to provide their time, talent, and to have compassion and empathy. Heart to Heart serves Allen Park, Canton, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Southgate, Taylor, Westland, Ypsilanti and beyond.
