Labor Day 2022 is right around the corner and like every year, Home Depot is hosting a massive sale and offering exciting deals on furniture and kitchen appliances.

The American holiday falls on the first Monday of September every year. This historic day is meant to celebrate the achievements and hard work of America’s working class.

The three-day weekend also marks the end of summer and the beginning of the school year.

While Labor Day today is marked with exciting sales and loads of fun activities, its history dates back to the late 19th century. The holiday is the result of labor activists pushing the federal government to recognize the incomparable contributions workers have made to America’s prosperity.

As per the U.S. Department of Labor’s website, Oregon was the first state to recognise Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. In the same year, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed a law honoring the day.

Home Depot remains many Americans’ one-stop shop for getting furniture and other home appliances. As usual, the retailer is hosting a massive sale to honor Labour Day.

The US Labor Department writes on its website that it’s not entirely clear who started the iconic holiday.

As per their website, records dating back to 1882 show that Peter J. McGuire, the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, was the one to suggest honoring the laboring classes with a holiday.

However, some others believe that machinist Matthew Maguire, not McGuire, started Labor Day.
