Location:                    600 block of N IH 35 SB

On Tuesday, September 6th, 2022, at approximately 8:16 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between three vehicles in the 600 block of N IH 35 SB. A preliminary investigation revealed that a garbage compactor truck was traveling southbound in the outside lane when it crashed into the rear end of a four-door sedan. The sedan then hit the back of a second garbage compactor truck.  The driver and passenger of the four-door sedan died on scene.  The drivers of both garbage compactor trucks were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

This crash is being investigated as Austin's 71st fatal crash of 2022, resulting in 73 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2021, there were 79 fatal crashes resulting in 85 deaths.
